Description: The wellheads protection areas (WHPAs) are polygons that signify the communities with approved Wellhead Protection Area delineations and the extent of the areas for resource management. The WHPAs are the areas surrounding a public water supply well that contribute to groundwater. The WHPAs were adapted from 37 shapefiles provided by the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) in November, 2005. There was one shapefile for each community's WHPA (although in some cases multiple communities/wellfields were combined into one study). The shapefiles were exported to a personal geodatabase feature class. Each separate feature class was then copied and pasted into one feature class named WellheadProtectionArea. A Name field was created, and the name of the original shapefile was used to populate it, meaning this is not any type of "official" name. WHPAs are generally identified by the owner/operator of the wells, rather than given a specific name. The Acres field was calculated based on the GIS area.
